We've all heard that content is king, yet when it comes to designing web experiences we're still stuck with lorem ipsum and placeholder images, as though the real content didn't matter.

We're still designing web experiences from the top down, starting with the desktop view of the homepage, even though they're more likely to be experienced from the bottom up - starting with a content detail page on a mobile device.

Designing from the content out means starting with atomic elements of content, and building a system of components and layouts based on the real structure of content.

Advanced WordPress Basics

For anyone comfortable with HTML, CSS, and a minimal amount of PHP, WordPress is the easiest content management system to "get your hands dirty" with and start customizing beyond the options built into your theme and plugins. Customizing WordPress is also a great entry point to learning PHP and JavaScript.

We'll peek behind the curtain to see how WordPress processes a page request, dip our toes in the waters of action hooks and filters, dig into simple plugins and child theme page templates, cook up our own shortcodes, tinker around under the hood to modify the WP admin interface, and mix metaphors in other ways to get that "fully custom" look.

The goals of this session are to understand "what's possible" with customization without building from scratch, gain familiarity with the structure and coding patterns of WordPress template and other files, learn how to implement a Child Theme, learn where to look for hooks that afford customization and how to find documentation and help in using them.

Participants should be comfortable using FTP, the WordPress admin and writing HTML, and understand the fundamental programming concepts of functions and variables (specific knowledge of PHP is not necessary, but helpful).

After working with a variety of web technologies for several years, Damien became a full-time Drupal engineer in 2008. Since then he has lead development of many sites - from a standardized platform for a 30+ site publishing company, to the media-rich presence for a ten station radio company, to a kid-safe site for a non-profit organization.

A very active contributor to the Drupal community, Damien maintains the leading Drupal 6 and 7 modules for SEO (Metatag, Nodewords) along with over a dozen others. While not working on his latest project or contributing, Damien can be found out and about with his family in their adopted home of Keene, NH, where he also helps run the local Drupal user group.

Introduction to WordPress Child Theming

So you've been playing around with WordPress. You feel like you've really gotten the hang it. However, you're starting to run into limitations with how much you can customize your site. The next step toward creating an entirely custom WordPress site is to create a child theme. A child theme is a theme which is based on another theme (the "parent theme"), and can override and/or add to the look and functionality of the parent theme.

This session is for: people who have made an HTML/CSS website, used WordPress, and run into customization limitations

Going Beyond The Loop

One of the most common tasks in WordPress theme development is to manipulate and/or display a certain set of posts outside of the main post listing. WP_Query is how you accomplish that, but it can seem like a very complex beast to tackle. This session would explain what WP_Query is and what it does, when to use it, and what to do when WP_Query isn't appropriate.

Modern WordPress Development Workflow

WordPress is well known for its user friendliness, but it's often not seen as very developer friendly. Out of the box, it doesn't necessarily promote modern, stable development practices, but that doesn't mean you can't bring these techniques and approaches to WordPress. This talk outlines one possible deployment workflow while covering the basic concepts of development/staging/production environments, version control and a few command line tools. We'll cover database migrations and keeping dependencies (like plugins, themes, and WordPress itself) up to date. Familiarity with using the terminal will be assumed, and it will be helpful if you already have WP-CLI and Composer running in your local environment.
