BOF - Why Drupal can save the Environmental Movement

Can it? Humanity is certainly at a crossroads. There is something universal about Open Source communities that unleashes human creativity, that drives people to late nights tearing down the barriers to their dreams and creating powerful change. What are the visions that Open Source people want for the world, and how does the Drupal framework bring that vision to reality?

20-min Presentation - Power + Parallels among Open Source Communities

The Pioneer Valley is teeming with groups that value free exchange of information, versatility + adaptability, and coming together for the common good. It is no coincidence that you find overlap among the people in Open
Source communities. This presentation outlines the parallels in the norms, values and practices of the Drupal community and two other local regenerative culture movements: Permaculture and Non-violent Communication.

25-min Discussion + Think Tank

What would happen if a web platform for collaboration, free discussion and collective enterprise were created with Open Source values at its core? It is amazing that Drupal Core has over 30,000 contributors. How is collaboration possible among this many people? The northeast permaculture community has over 10,000 people. Imagine if they could collaborate to an equal degree, and if they could network and collaborate among movements with similar core values. The sky would be the limit, and the movement would be firmly rooted in the ground.
Thank We.

Session Time Slot(s):

How do I get started contributing to Drupal core?

This general overview of contributing to Drupal core includes discussion of:

who can contribute to Drupal core

what are the tools needed to contribute to Drupal

how can I find issues to work on

what role do mentors play

how can I contribute after today

This session will include helping participants set up a Drupal 8 development environment on their laptop as well as installing the other common tools used to contribute to Drupal.

The session will be followed by a "Get Involved with Core" sprint. This is an opportunity for first-time contributors to Drupal to get involved by spending the day working on Drupal 8.

All new contributors (developers, themers, quality assurers, documentation writers, business analysts, project managers) are encouraged to attend the session and follow on sprint. No prior experience is needed. Please remember to bring your laptop. Mentors will be present during the event to help get you started and to help you as you work on an issue.

Experienced Drupalists are also encouraged to attend the "Get Involved with Core" sprint, either to work on issues individually or in groups or to mentor newcomers.

Experience level:

Beginner

Sessions Topics:

DrupalCampMA

Speaker Bio(s):

Leslie Glynn, leslieg, leslie@ownsourcing.com

A quick trip though Panopoly and Panopoly derivations

This will be an introduction to Panopoly and distributions based on Panopoly (notably OpenAtrium). Panopoly is a very rich distribution, giving you a lot of tools out of the box that don't exist in a Drupal Core installation. On the other hand Panopolly (and particularly OpenAtrium) can be very confusing to a new user. We will do a quick trip through the features of Panopoly, concentrating on using them from a site builder perspective. This will not be a session about development for Panopoly, but aimed more toward the site builder or end user. Topics will include

    Drupal Distributions - whey they exist and how they are different than Drupal - some ideas on whether this is for you

    Why use Panopoly?

    A trip through what Panopoly gives you that Drupal does not

    Reasons to not use Panopoly

    Panelizer, panels, Stylizer - Oh My!

    Some caveats about upgrading in Panopoly (and OpenAtrium) - you're going to have to understand Features.

    Other distributions based on Panopoly, and what their strengths are - espeically why OpenAtrium is a special distribution

Mobile Apps Made Easy: Using HTML to create your app

It's possible using tools you already know: HTML, Javascript, CSS and a CMS for a content repository. This session will explain how you can use Drupal 8, Apache Cordova, and the Ionic Framework to rapidly build and release your mobile app. In under an hour, we’ll walk through the background concepts required to go from web developer to mobile developer, and take you through the development cycle of a sample app.

Experience level:

Intermediate

Session Time Slot(s):

The Flexibility of Drupal

No other CMS offers more flexibility then Drupal. If you need to implement a piece of functionality or change a piece of data, there are a million different ways you can go about it. However, this flexibility can also be daunting and frustrating. How do you know if you are going about your changes the “right" way?

The truth of the matter is that there is no “right" way - just the “right for me” way. Any method you choose will come with it’s own sets of drawbacks and benefits.

In this session we will demonstrate the flexibility of Drupal by going over 9 different ways (across Drupal 7 and Drupal 8) that data can be manipulated. From a backend only solution to a front-end only solution, a “Drupal friendly” way to a “hacky” way, using a contrib module to writing a custom module. This session will demonstrate how to implement each one and outline their individual pros and cons.

Slides:

nerdsummit-drupal-flexability.pdf

Experience level:

Beginner

Session Time Slot(s):

Demystifying Drupal AJAX Commands

When Drupal 7 was released in 2011, it came with an improved implementation of AJAX functionality. Good-bye “AHAH” and hello “AJAX Framework”. But four years later, some of the improvements that came along with the Drupal AJAX Framework go widely unused or unknown.

Introducing AJAX commands. The set of functions you should already be using, which allow AJAX callbacks to do much more then return rendered HTML.

This session will highlight and outline the Drupal AJAX command functions offered by the AJAX framework in both Drupal 7 and Drupal 8. In this session we will cover the following:

The Drupal AJAX command functions.

What functionality AJAX command functions provide.

When and how to use the AJAX command functions.

How to create custom AJAX commands.

Slides:

nyccamp-ajax-callback-commands.pdf

Experience level:

Intermediate

Session Time Slot(s):

Distributions:  Learning from Others

Drupal comes with some assembly required. Drupal core itself is pretty bare bones. Thanks to several thousand contributed modules, virtually any functionality is possible. Distributions take those modules, combine them with configuration to serve a specific use case. There are almost 500 distributions on drupal.org, so it is possible there’s one that might meet your needs, or a lot of them.

Distributions are also often big, enabling over 100 modules, and notoriously hard to update.

Even if you don’t use a distribution, distributions have another, useful, purpose—you can learn from them.

Join us as we perform autopsies of three distributions with similar goals—enabling rapid development of governmental websites:

		aGov

		OpenPublic

		WetKit

Like a medical examiner, we’ll dissect the distributions and try to understand how and why they were constructed. We’ll also look at how these distributions have evolved their approach as they have gained experience using the distribution.

Among the things we’ll cover are:

		Modules used

		Content types

		Views

		Features (how components are being modularized)

Nearly Headless Drupal

There are some things Drupal is great at, and some things it is, well, less great at. With years of hard work, Drupal has become a pretty strong content manager. You can build robust data models, easily enable content revisioning, and build out a publishing workflow complex enough for even the strictest of editorial standards. However, even the blistering speed of development on Drupal 8 appears glacial when compared with the rate of invention on the front-end of web development.

In this session we will take a look at how you can build small custom modules to leverage the content management strengths of Drupal while taking advantage of the latest advances in front-end technologies to build more interactivity into a Drupal website with minimal effort and maximum portability.

Slides:

nearly-headless-drupal.pdf

Experience level:

Intermediate

Session Time Slot(s):
