We’re hiring again! Common Media is looking for an outstanding Drupal Developer or Senior Drupal Developer to join our team in Hadley, MA. We’re a web design, development and consulting shop with a healthy mix of new and ongoing projects, and we’re looking for an experienced Drupal developer who is passionate about building beautiful, intuitive and functional websites.

We hire craftspeople who care about keeping their tools sharp: we look for co-workers who are smart, get things done, and care about doing things right. We appreciate a wide breadth of experience, but the final requirements for this particular opening are a passion for Drupal and the drive to keep up with the tools, processes and techniques that allow us to create amazing websites for our clients without missing deadlines or exceeding budgets.

Primary responsibilities will include:

Drupal project planning, site-building and theming for new client projects
Larger new-feature additions to existing Drupal client projects

Valued skills and attributes:

A healthy respect for and knowledge of the Drupal API and standard development practices
Ability to write consistent, standards-compliant HTML and CSS
Ability to create efficient and maintainable interactive features with jQuery (optional)
Ability to consider edge cases and thoroughly test your own code
An earnest belief in writing good code for the sake of writing good code
Ability (and eagerness) to learn new skills on the job
Comfort working on the command line, especially in Mac and Linux environments
Familiarity with modern version control, preferably Git

This session will include helping participants set up a Drupal 8 development environment on their laptop as well as installing the other common tools used to contribute to Drupal.

The session will be followed by a "Get Involved with Core" sprint. This is an opportunity for first-time contributors to Drupal to get involved by spending the day working on Drupal 8.

All new contributors (developers, themers, quality assurers, documentation writers, business analysts, project managers) are encouraged to attend the session and follow on sprint. No prior experience is needed. Please remember to bring your laptop. Mentors will be present during the event to help get you started and to help you as you work on an issue.

Experienced Drupalists are also encouraged to attend the "Get Involved with Core" sprint, either to work on issues individually or in groups or to mentor newcomers.

A quick trip though Panopoly and Panopoly derivations

This will be an introduction to Panopoly and distributions based on Panopoly (notably OpenAtrium). Panopoly is a very rich distribution, giving you a lot of tools out of the box that don't exist in a Drupal Core installation. On the other hand Panopolly (and particularly OpenAtrium) can be very confusing to a new user. We will do a quick trip through the features of Panopoly, concentrating on using them from a site builder perspective. This will not be a session about development for Panopoly, but aimed more toward the site builder or end user. Topics will include

Why use Panopoly?

The Flexibility of Drupal

No other CMS offers more flexibility then Drupal. If you need to implement a piece of functionality or change a piece of data, there are a million different ways you can go about it. However, this flexibility can also be daunting and frustrating. How do you know if you are going about your changes the “right" way?

The truth of the matter is that there is no “right" way - just the “right for me” way. Any method you choose will come with it’s own sets of drawbacks and benefits.

In this session we will demonstrate the flexibility of Drupal by going over 9 different ways (across Drupal 7 and Drupal 8) that data can be manipulated. From a backend only solution to a front-end only solution, a “Drupal friendly” way to a “hacky” way, using a contrib module to writing a custom module. This session will demonstrate how to implement each one and outline their individual pros and cons.

When Drupal 7 was released in 2011, it came with an improved implementation of AJAX functionality. Good-bye “AHAH” and hello “AJAX Framework”. But four years later, some of the improvements that came along with the Drupal AJAX Framework go widely unused or unknown.

Drupal comes with some assembly required. Drupal core itself is pretty bare bones. Thanks to several thousand contributed modules, virtually any functionality is possible. Distributions take those modules, combine them with configuration to serve a specific use case. There are almost 500 distributions on drupal.org, so it is possible there’s one that might meet your needs, or a lot of them.

Distributions are also often big, enabling over 100 modules, and notoriously hard to update.

Even if you don’t use a distribution, distributions have another, useful, purpose—you can learn from them.

Join us as we perform autopsies of three distributions with similar goals—enabling rapid development of governmental websites:

WetKit

Like a medical examiner, we’ll dissect the distributions and try to understand how and why they were constructed. We’ll also look at how these distributions have evolved their approach as they have gained experience using the distribution.

Nearly Headless Drupal

There are some things Drupal is great at, and some things it is, well, less great at. With years of hard work, Drupal has become a pretty strong content manager. You can build robust data models, easily enable content revisioning, and build out a publishing workflow complex enough for even the strictest of editorial standards. However, even the blistering speed of development on Drupal 8 appears glacial when compared with the rate of invention on the front-end of web development.
